Ms. Marvel co-creator G. Willow Wilson shares her feelings on Kamala Khan’s upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.

Kamala Khan has been a fan-favorite character since she first appeared in comic books in 2013. Now, she’ll finally make her way to the MCU in the Ms. Marvel TV series on Disney Plus. Seeing the young heroine in the live-action realm is a dream come true for many, including co-creator G. Willow Wilson.

Wilson caught up with io9 to discuss her recent work and was asked about Ms. Marvel’s inclusion in the MCU. While she’s excited to see Kamala come to life, she’s also curious as to how some of the character’s key attributes will translate:

"“She has a power set that I really am glad it’s not my job to bring to a screen because it won’t be easy. Her back story makes use of, and reference to, many, many different sort of pop culture nuggets that worked very well as kind of visual jokes on a comic book page, and I don’t know how those are going to translate to the big screen, or if they’ll even try.”"

Still, Wilson is looking forward to seeing how things pan out and is amazed the character has managed to stay around after being intended for a limited run:

"“More than anything else though, this has all been a pinch-me moment because when we were developing the [comic] series, the goal was to get to 10 issues and to see this all play out six and a half years later is so far beyond my wildest dreams.”"

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Kamala Khan was viewed as a breath of fresh air when she made her comic book debut, possessing a power set and personality that instantly appealed to readers. Being a teenage Pakistani American girl, she also brought a unique perspective to the Marvel Universe. These elements, along with Wilson, Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie’s work on the character, has garnered acclaim from critics and fans alike over the last several years.

Kamala has also made a name for herself on television through the animated series Avengers Assemble and Spider-Man, as well as the Marvel Rising television specials. Her eponymous series on Disney Plus will mark her first live-action appearance in any medium.

As a shapeshifter with pop culture-infused origins, she will be a challenge to adapt. But Marvel Studios has proven, with characters like Doctor Strange and the Guardians of the Galaxy, that they understand what works and doesn’t work for live-action. Hopefully, they’ll take the same time and care in adapting Kamala Khan.
