James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad set to begin filming in Atlanta
Warner Bros. has confirmed that filming for The Suicide Squad is set to begin next week in Atlanta then later in Panama.
A source at Warner Bros. has confirmed to ComicBook.com that James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is set to begin filming next week in Atlanta. The production is set to film in Georgia for three weeks before moving production to Panama for additional filming for a month.
Jai Courtney, in an interview with Collider Live, has also confirmed the start date for filming. Courtney was careful not to reveal too much about the movie including the look of his character, Captain Boomerang. ComicBook.com offers a transcript of part of his interview:
"“It’s going to be totally different,” Courtney said. “I don’t know what I can say. Of course it’s going ot be different in tone. it’s got James Gunn stuff all over it, we’re going to meet some new people, and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”"
The star-studded cast, along with Gunn, hopes to improve on the disappointment that was David Ayers’ Suicide Squad. The movie does not appear to be a sequel to the 2016 movie though how much of a reboot Gunn’s movie will be is still unknown especially with very little plot details revealed thus far. Also, ComicBook.com did an interview with producer Peter Safran who hints that The Suicide Squad will largely be an isolated movie that does not feature many tie-ins to other DCEU movies. Safran told ComicBook.com:
"“I think that is the goal,” Safran said in an earlier interview. “It is giving heroes their time to shine and not feeling like you have to shoehorn in some universal connection amongst them all. The studio’s been incredibly supportive and DC’s been supportive about saying, ‘Take the time that you need to introduce these characters in the right way and tell the stories that audiences want to see with these characters.'”"

If this is indeed the case, then it is a step in the right direction for Warner Bros. Having good standalone movies is a much better direction rather than mediocre movies that attempt to create a larger universe and attempt to compete with Marvel. It also gives the creators of these movies more creative freedom to execute their vision without being beholden to lore or a cinematic universe to uphold to. Gunn appears to have a strong vision for The Suicide Squad, and that is the most fans can ask for.
