There’s a new team writing Batman now, and they’ve promised to bring Nightwing back in the near future. Will we see Dick Grayson in comics again?
Could the reign of Ric finally be over? On Batman Day, which was celebrated around the world on September 21, DC Comics announced a new team of creators to take over the Batman title – writer James Tynion IV and artist Tony Daniel. The question posed to the current and future Batman creatives was whether the original Nightwing, Dick Grayson, would ever return to his own title again. At a Barnes & Noble event, Bleeding Cool reported that the DC Comics panelists said Nightwing would be back in 2020. Just in time to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Dick Grayson’s debut.
Dick Grayson has been out of commission in comics since his character was shot in the head by KGBeast in Batman No. 55. The attack left Grayson with amnesia, to the extent that he has completely forgotten about his life as a superhero, be it as Robin or Nightwing. From Nightwing No. 50 onwards, the series has been following Ric Grayson, the new name the character has taken on to live his new life.
Without the original Nightwing to protect Blüdhaven, a team of police officers has taken on the moniker to become the Nightwings. Ric has struggled with his conscience since his recovery but now helps the Nightwings when needed. Nearly 15 issues following Ric’s arrival, and there’s been no sign that Dick Grayson is any closer to returning.
The decision to effectively ‘kill’ Dick and the original Nightwing has been met with a fair amount of controversy, especially since Dick’s injury took place off-page in a different series. The amnesia heralded the cancellation of the Titans comics and has caused dwindling fan love for Nightwing. While the Ric Grayson storyline injected Nightwing with new energy, many feel that the arc does Dick Grayson fans a disservice, especially since Ric kept trying to avoid being a hero and helping his city.

Ric has had to embrace his heroic abilities again, especially since ghosts of Dick Grayson’s past keep coming back to revisit him and attack his loved ones.
It’s been a Nightwing kind of week, with new art by Nicola Scott taking the Twitter world by storm, and leaked images from the Titans set purporting to show Brenton Thwaites in a Nightwing costume. Now the news that Nightwing could possibly return to his own title suggests DC is preparing for some kind of celebration of the character in the near future.
Have you been enjoying the current Ric Grayson arc? Or are you just waiting for Dick to become Nightwing again?
