Matt Reeves’ The Batman will reportedly kick off a brand new film trilogy and possibly expand past those initial movies.

The Batman has been one of the most talked-about, superhero films in a while, as many are interested in seeing director Matt Reeves’ take on the Caped Crusader. Reeves’ movie is still over a year and a half away, so it’s too early to tell how things will pan out. However, Warner Bros. already seems to have plans for the future.

According to a report from Forbes, Matt Reeves is developing The Batman as the first chapter in a new Batman trilogy. In addition, Warner Bros. is hoping to expand the franchise beyond those three films, with either Reeves or a new filmmaker attached.

Many speculated that Reeves’ movie wouldn’t be a one-off for several reasons. Because of the popularity of Batman, it’s not surprising that Warner Bros. and DC want future installments if this new Dark Knight strikes a chord with moviegoers. Batman’s mythology is also full of stories ready to be adapted for the big screen, providing Reeves with plenty of material to draw from.

Of course, Reeves is no stranger to blockbuster film franchises. In 2014, he stepped in to direct the second installment in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series and went on to helm the third film, as well. Both films are examples of how Reeves can tell a linear narrative across multiple films, which is especially impressive since he was picking up a story started by another filmmaker. And in the case of Planet of the Apes, he also managed to chart new territory for the franchise while paying reverence to the original films. This particular point will be key for his work on The Batman.

Things seem to be moving right along for The Batman, as Forbes also reports that more casting announcements are on the way. Reeves has a monumental task ahead of him, to say the least. But with a clear direction and the castings of Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright and Jonah Hill, he’s off to a nice start. The Batman is slated to hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
