The chances of a new Spider-Man deal were slim, but Tom Holland apparently convinced Disney and Marvel to re-enter negotiations.

Fans rejoiced when Sony and Marvel Studios (Disney) announced they had reached a new agreement for Spider-Man. But no one was more excited about the news than Spidey himself, Tom Holland. The young actor was keen on staying in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so much so that he made personal appeals for a new deal.

A new report from THR reveals that Holland made several appeals to both Sony film chairman Tom Rothman and Disney CEO Bob Iger to reach a Spider-Man agreement. According to a THR source, a possible third film was “100 percent dead” at the time Holland met with the entertainment moguls.

Following the breakdown of the initial talks between Sony and Marvel, Holland spoke about the future of the Spider-Man series. Despite the situation, he remained upbeat about the prospect of a reboot, assuring fans that the character was in good hands. This new development, however, confirms most people’s suspicions that he ideally wanted the MCU to be his cinematic home.

Holland, a lifelong Spider-Man fan, has been passionate about the role since he was cast back in 2015, ahead of his debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Over the past several years, he’s grown with the character and has expressed a desire to keep playing the famous web-slinger for years to come. Based on all of this, it should come as no surprise that Holland would take personal measures to ensure a new licensing agreement was reached.

With the updated deal in place, Holland will now star in a third solo film and an unannounced Marvel movie, keeping Spidey in the MCU for at least a few more years. That third Spider-Man film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 16, 2021.
