With Marvel’s flagship Star Wars series coming to an end soon, Marvel was bound to replace it and, now, we know what that new series will be.

Announced during the Lucasfilm publishing panel at New York Comic Con, Star Wars will be relaunched with a new No.1 on focus on a new time period — the time between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Nothing much has been explored during the year between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, so it’s an exciting prospect to finally be moving on from the time between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. And taking over the series will be writer Charles Soule and artist Jesus Saiz.

Soule is no stranger to writing Star Wars comics, as he has done so many times over the past several years. He’s worked on Poe Dameron, Obi-Wan & Anakin, and Lando, as well as the upcoming series The Rise of Kylo Ren. His best series, though, is possibly one of the best stories in Star Wars, regardless of medium, and that is Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith. Soule has shown that he’s comfortable exploring time periods that have not been touched upon previously in canon, thus making him an excellent choice for the series:

Soule and Saiz previously worked together over at DC during their run on Swamp Thing. Much like Geoff Johns did for Green Lantern, the two created and transformed whole aspects of the Swamp Thing mythos during their run. They added entirely new elements and avatars that Swamp Thing interacts with while also developing the mythology of the Green in an extremely satisfying way. They’ve worked well together before, so seeing them re-team after several years is exciting.

Marvel’s current volume of Star Wars will end with issue No. 75 on November 20th, while Soule and Saiz’s Star Wars series will debut in January 2020.
