Matt Reeves’ The Batman adds newcomer Jayme Lawson in mystery role

11/11/2019 UPDATE: io9 has exclusively learned that Jayme Lawson will play a new character named Bella, “a grassroots political candidate running for office in Gotham.”

The Batman has reportedly added up-and-comer Jayme Lawson in an undisclosed role.

The cast of Matt Reeves’ The Batman is filling out, with the Robert Pattinson-led film seemingly gaining more talent by the day. While the project has added recognizable names so far, it seems a fresh face has now been cast.

Collider reports that Jayme Lawson has joined The Batman in a role that is currently being kept under wraps. Lawson is a young actress who just recently graduated from Julliard and signed with United Talent Agency. As of right now, she doesn’t have any listed professional acting credits. She did, however, play the title role in Hamlet while in school, as well as Lady Macbeth.

More from DCEU

Lawson will join a cast that includes Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Matt Reeves is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin.

Given that Lawson is a young woman of African-American descent, some may be led to speculate that she’s playing Barbara Gordon in the film. This is plausible since Jeffrey Wright is also African-American.

Casting a relative unknown as Barbara Gordon, who would theoretically become Batgirl in a future film, does make sense. It’s clear that Warner Bros. and DC want a fresh take on the Batman mythology. Casting a fresh face adds to the notion of wanting to start anew. And as Collider points out, the studio has a track record of creating vehicles for new talent, including Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot.

There are a few possibilities when it comes to Lawson’s role, so we’ll just have to wait and see who she plays when The Batman hits theaters on June 25, 2021.
