Robert Downey Jr. will be joining a long list of actors that will reprise their MCU roles for Disney Plus and Marvel’s What If…? animated series.

Robert Downey Jr. may be saying goodbye to future live-action roles in the MCU after Avengers: Endgame, but that doesn’t mean he will say goodbye to Iron Man just yet.

In a recent interview with Buzzfeed, Jeff Goldblum answered fan questions including those about the Grandmaster’s involvement in Thor: Love and Thunder. He did not have any details about Thor: Love and Thunder, but he did provide information on What If…?. Comingsoon.net has the full quote of Goldblum’s answer:

"“I played the part again a couple of days ago. I went to the Disney studios and I recorded the Grandmaster’s voice for an episode of a show that’s gonna be on Disney+ that’s called What If…?,” Goldblum said. “It’s an animated version of all the characters we know and love from Marvel and this episode included the Grandmaster and Iron Man, so Robert Downey will do a voice for that, and Korg. Taika Waititi had already recorded his voice for that, so yeah, for a couple hours I enjoyed doing that."

Downey Jr. will be joining many other actors who will be returning to voice their respective characters for the animated anthology series, with Jeffrey Wright joining as The Watcher, who serves as the show’s narrator.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

What If…? provides many fun opportunities for the MCU, including what appears to be Iron Man, Grandmaster and Korg possibly sharing a scene together. Even Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor was originally conceived for What If…? making it a possibility that a scenario in this series could be used in the MCU films.

The “What If” storylines have been around since 1977 and are ongoing . They feature stories like Iron Man being transported to the time of King Arthur and Spider-Man joining the Fantastic Four.

An animated series gives fans a nice breather from the grand plan Marvel and Disney have for the MCU and Disney Plus, especially in a busy 2021. The series also provides a chance to attract casual viewers who do not need to watch previous Marvel movies and TV shows to enjoy the stories. It gives fans the opportunity to see characters share the same screen that they may never get the chance to see in the main MCU timeline.
