As Smallville fans, we were lucky to have the Arrowverse give us more than a few Easter Eggs. Crisis on Infinite Earths will allow them to take it one step further and bring back some of our favorite cast members. Returning to reprise their roles are Smallville alums Tom Welling and Erica Durance. While we all love Tom Welling, don’t expect him to come back and dawn spandex and a red cape after Crisis.

Before we get into the why, there’s a couple of things that have to be made clear. Smallville was in a world of its own. We aren’t sure which one, but it’s easy to imagine it was parallel to Earth-38, aka Supergirl’s earth. With that said, the Arrowverse has their own version of Clark Kent and Lois played by Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch, respectively, and a Superman and Lois Lane show starring the pair is in development.

It doesn’t mean much, but considering Welling isn’t likely to reprise his role beyond Crisis on Infinite Earths  and the Arrowverse has plans for Hoechlin; there’s only room for one Man of Steel. The death of Welling’s Clark Kent could act as a symbolic passing of the torch as fans prepare to embrace a different Superman.

It wouldn’t be the first time Superman died in a Crisis storyline. In pages of DC Comics’ Infinite Crisis story arc, Superman died in a fight with Superboy-Prime while on a planet filled with Kryptonite. For the Arrowverse, things will play out differently. How he dies is anyone’s guess, but it’s easy to see why he’d be one of the heroes to fall during Crisis.
