Dwayne Johnson confirms Black Adam will feature the Justice Society of America in the character’s origin story.

During a press junket for Jumanji: The Next Level, Dwayne Johnson told Screenrant, “JSA. We will introduce you to that, the world to JSA.” Johnson confirms that the Justice Society of America will feature in some way to Black Adam’s origin story.

The news brings to light early rumors about Hawkman and Stargirl’s involvement in the movie. It also gives fans more substantial news about Black Adam since Johnson has been cast as the Shazam villain.

In the same press junket interview, Johnson said that Zachary Levi’s Shazam is not in the movie, but the character is on his radar. His comments make it clear that Johnson and director Jaume Collet-Serra have a clear direction they want to go for the Black Adam character and his fit in the DCEU.

Editor Sheldon Mayer and writer Gardner Fox conceived of the JSA in 1940 during the Golden Age of Comic Books. However, Black Adam’s involvement with the team does not happen until the team’s revival post-Crisis on Infinite Earths in the 1990s and their series in the late ’90s and early 2000s written by Geoff Johns.

During his time with the JSA, Black Adam was a temporary member and an antagonist to the team. Johns and David S. Goyer altered Black Adam’s personality in an attempt to make him an anti-hero, and they altered his backstory basing him from Kahndaq and not Egypt.

Black Adam was implied in Shazam! without actually appearing. The Wrap has a full rundown on the character’s role in Shazam!, referring to how the film clearly revealed that the previous champion was indeed Black Adam.

Despite their runs in the modern era, the JSA is still a team of a different era making it likely Black Adam will take place in the past. The brief backstory in Shazam! gives cover for New Line to not interfere too much with the current DCEU which still has an ambiguous future.
