Adepero Oduye has reportedly joined the cast of Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the first Marvel series from Disney Plus, has officially begun production in Atlanta. Details are still relatively scarce on the plot or additional cast members. However, it appears the show has added another name in an unknown role.

A new batch of set photos from the upcoming show recently surfaced online, and they reveal that actress Adepero Oduye has joined the cast. In the stills, Oduye can be seen speaking with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. At this point, there’s no indication as to who she’s playing, but some believe she could be someone close to Wilson.

She joins Mackie and the returning Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp and Daniel Brühl, who play Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Sharon Carter/Agent 13 and Helmut Zemo, respectively. Wyatt Russell also stars as John Walker/U.S. Agent. Malcolm Spellman serves as showrunner, with John Wick writer Derek Kolstad and director Kari Skogland on board, as well.

Oduye has appeared in highly praised films like Pariah, 12 Years a Slave and The Big Short, and she most recently starred in Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed miniseries, When They See Us. She’s also no stranger to big-budget projects, as she previously appeared in 2017’s Geostorm.

One aspect of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that was mentioned in Marvel’s Expanding the Universe documentary is the exploration of Sam Wilson’s past. Up until now, little has been said about Sam’s backstory, save for his service in the Air Force. This show could remedy that by introducing key figures from his past, and he’s going to need all of the support he can get while taking on the mantle of Captain America.

We’ll find out for sure who Oduye is playing when The Falcon and the Winter Soldier debuts on Disney Plus in late 2020.
