DC Films putting their focus on Superman and Green Lantern
DC Films and Warner Bros. are hoping to get a Superman and Green Lantern movies planned out for the DCEU.
While Wonder Woman is preparing for its sequel and The Batman is hoping to bring Batman back on track, Superman and Green Lantern still have unclear futures in the DC Extended Universe.
A detailed report from Variety does not mention Henry Cavill but Michael B. Jordan as a possible modern interpretation of Superman. Warner Bros. and DC Films are reportedly wary of putting out another Superman movie in fear of oversaturation due to the number of projects that have come out in the past decade that feature the character (Superman Returns, Man of Steel, Smallville etc.).
Variety reports that Jordan and Warner Bros. met earlier this year to chart out a vision for the character. However, Jordan does not plan to sign up for anything with filming unlikely to happen anytime soon. Insiders tell Variety that a Superman film is unlikely to hit theaters before 2023.
Jordan as Superman would be inspired casting and would bring stability for Jordan in his run-in with superhero movies. His performance as Kilmonger in Black Panther was highly praised, but the character’s death prevents future involvement in the Marve Cinematic Universe, and Fantastic Four flopped, ending his involvement with 20th Century Fox’s Marvel movies.

J.J. Abrams and his production company, Bad Robot, inked a first-look deal with Warner Bros., linking them to Superman and Green Lantern projects.
Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern Corps movie is still in the works with Johns expected to deliver a script before the end of the year. Abrams and Bad Robot are expected to be presented with the project if they are interested in producing the picture.
Warner Bros. also has plans for Green Lantern on HBO Max with the Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti working on a Green Lantern TV show with Geoff Johns. Berlanti’s involvement may lead him to a feature film according to Variety.
These plans show that DC Films and Warner Bros. are willing to take the slow approach to a full Justice League movie unlike the previous attempt at a big team-up movie, which failed at the box office.
Industry insiders told Variety that Warner Bros. went in too fast to compete with Marvel and suffered for it. Walter Hamada, president of DC Films, is credited for bringing DC back on track and taking the Marvel approach of individual films that lead to bigger movies.
