Released: July 2, 2019

If Avengers: Endgame was the sombre finale to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first three phases, then Spider-Man: Far From Home was undoubtedly the cheery encore.

A film designed to deal with the aftermath of the infamous snap, it highlighted how Peter Parker was attempting to move on in a world that had all but left him behind – all while attempting to grieve the loss of the man who had served as a father figure in his life. However, it also administered a much needed dose of fun into the saga, allowing Phase 3 to close on a much more positive note.

Unapologetically youthful and outrageously funny, Far From Home managed to do all of the above and still felt like the definitive Spider-Man movie. The titular hero never got lost in the madness of the wider universe as the film itself managed to produce a thoroughly engaging standalone narrative that finally positions Spidey as the face of the MCU.

Tom Holland excels in what may just be the young star’s best performance yet while Jake Gyllenhall is positively electric as the illusive Mysterio, and the pair’s on-screen chemistry is nothing short of spectacular.

A film with so much heart, Spider-Man: Far From Home effectively managed to overcome the gravity of Endgame to set up an intriguing – and hopeful – future. And it did it all while being one of the most enjoyable superhero movies the MCU has ever produced.
