The Skywalker Saga has ended, but that doesn’t there are no more stories to tell in Star Wars. And, as this new rumor suggests, the next films will be set centuries before Luke and Leia are born.

Now that The Rise of Skywalker has been released, Star Wars is in a bit of a lull state as it moves forward. Sure, there are plenty of things that are still being released in the franchise, such as The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan, and Cassian Andor live-action series, as well as the final season of The Clone Wars, but there isn’t much known about the next film.

According to a new rumor from Jason Ward at MakingStarWars.net, the next series of films will be set roughly 400 years before The Phantom Menace, in the “High Republic” era.

The article stipulates that this was the prequel series of films that D.B. Weiss and David Benioff were working on before they departed the project. As of now though, it’s unknown about story ideas and characters from those two will be used in the upcoming series. And, according to the report, the series will feature both Jedi and non-Jedi protagonists, pretty much like every other Star Wars story has had.

There have been years of speculation and talk about when the next Star Wars series will take place. Many, including this writer, thought that Lucasfilm would make the decision to go back in time and explore an era that hasn’t really been touched in this new canon and, if this rumor is true, that would be an exciting step for the franchise.

There’s a lot of ground to explore and it would be interesting to see more of the Sith in the new series, as the “Rule of Two” would be established at this point and they are still very much in hiding. We’ve seen a lot of the Jedi in the franchise, so it would be very intriguing to deep dive into some Sith lore at some point.

At the end of the day though, this is just a rumor at this point, so it’s a waiting game until Lucasfilm officially announces what their next plans are.
