Michael Pena has doubts about a superhero future for Ant-Man’s Luis.

Luis has been a key ally to Scott Lang in the Ant-Man franchise, but it doesn’t look like the optimistic ex-con will be getting the superpowers he’s long been hoping for. Michael Pena told ComicBookMovie.com that he thinks a superhero alter ego for his fan-favorite character is out of the question for the foreseeable future:

"“That was the whole second movie where I was begging for a suit and then he said no, so it was ‘How about a suit with limited powers?’ and he said no, so I said, ‘How about a suit with no powers?’ and they said no again, so I think it’s a “no” so far! “"

Nevertheless, the actor is well aware that anything can happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so he won’t entirely dismiss the idea:

"“But, you never know with these guys. Most of the actors don’t know what’s going to come about and what’s going to happen in these movies. If we did, we would all be Kevin Feiges, you know?”"

From the moment he first saw Scott shrink in the original 2015 film, Luis has been enamored by his best friend’s status as a hero. This would lead him to beg Hank Pym and Hope van Dyne for a suit and powers of his own in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Unfortunately for him, neither was willing to grant his request. Luis did, however, manage to help save the day in both movies — in his own way, of course.

Phase Four will mark a new era for the MCU, one that will see supporting characters rise into starring roles. Even Scott Lang’s daughter, Cassie, could be forging a superhero identity of her own. With this, it wouldn’t be impossible for Luis to get the spotlight in some shape or form. A limited series on series on Disney Plus would be a way to highlight him, but Pena admits he “would like to keep on doing movies.”

Pena is unsure if he’ll return for the third Ant-Man film but is interested in reprising his role. Given the popularity of the character, it would be surprising if Marvel Studios opted not to use Luis again. Details on the Peyton Reed-directed threequel are scarce, but most of the main cast is expected to return. Production on Ant-Man 3 will reportedly commence in 2021 for a tentative 2022 release date.
