Yet another superhero film has been added to the ever-growing list of film delays lately and that is Matt Reeves The Batman.

Just a few weeks after it was announced that Wonder Woman 1984 was being pushed back from June to August, it has been revealed that The Batman is being moved from June 25, 2021 to October 1, 2021. This comes amidst several other film delays for Warner Bros., which also included date changes to The Flash and Shazam! 2. Shazam! 2 has been moved from April 1, 2022 to November 4, 2022 while The Flash has, surprisingly, been pushed forward to June 3, 2022 from July 1, 2022.

This announcement of the release date change for The Batman is unsurprising as most every major studio film is having to do so right now due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Like many other productions, production on The Batman had been shut down with no clear idea when it will start back up. As such, the release date shift is the smart move on a simple creative level as it allows the Matt Reeves-led production adequate time to finish the project when production begins again.

Moving to October seems like a great marketing move as well for the film as a Batman film releasing just in time for Halloween seems perfect. The character has always been one of the more horror-tinged characters in the DC canon, so now it seems that there’s a chance to lean into that. At least from a marketing standpoint.

More from DCEU

It also wouldn’t be shocking if Reeves did in fact inject horror elements to the film, which would make it more a fit for Halloween than the summer. Reeves is no stranger to the horror genre as he directed both Cloverfield and Let Me In, an American remake of Let the Right One in.

In a time where hard decisions are continuing to be made regarding entertainment properties, this release date shift may end up working out for the better for all involved.
