A mystery female-led Marvel movie is coming from Sony and it has tapped director S.J. Clarkson. Could this be the film debut of this Spider-Man character?

As revealed by Variety, television director S.J. Clarkson has signed on to develop a female-centric movie set within Sony’s Marvel Universe – or as it was recently named, the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters.

While there is no confirmation as to which character will be the focal point of this film, some insiders believe there is a strong possibility that it could be a Madame Web movie.

We do know that a Madame Web movie is in development. After all, it was revealed by Collider last year that screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (the duo behind the 2017 Power Rangers reboot, the upcoming Morbius film and the current executive producers of Netflix’s Lost In Space) were developing the project with producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. This was back in September and there hasn’t been any update on its progress since then.

Representatives of Sony remained tight-lipped about what character they plan to adapt on the silver screen. Although there is speculation circling around Madame Web being that character, there is also a chance that the rumored Spider-Woman film is actually what they are beginning to develop.

As for Clarkson, over the course of a decade, she has racked up a list of directing credits on TV from Ugly Betty to Banshee and Bates Motel to Succession. Moreover, she has been a recurring name on shortlists of directors to helm some major films. For instance, she came very close to directing the next Star Trek movie after Beyond. Clarkson is no stranger to Marvel either, having been behind multiple episodes of Jessica Jones and The Defenders for Netflix.

The unnamed SPUMC project in question has no screenwriter attached nor a star attached, so it remains to be seen which character will be added to Sony’s Spider-verse film slate.
