Several DC Comics films will be unexpectedly leaving HBO Max in July
By Scott Brown
Just over a month after HBO Max launched, several of its DC Comics will leave the service, albeit temporarily.
HBO Max launched two weeks ago on May 27 and it has already announced that several of the DC Comics films that it promoted itself with are leaving the service on July 1. These films include Wonder Woman, Justice League, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin among others.
Now, these films won’t be leaving the service permanently though, as Deadline has confirmed that it will have something of a rotating schedule as to what films will be available .
This model of a rotating film slate is similar to what HBO Max’s sister service, DC Universe, has been doing since its launch in 2018. However, none of the more recent DCEU films were ever offered on the service and the films that were rotating on it weren’t featured as prominently in the advertising campaign for DC Universe.

- All 8 Black Canary actresses ranked from worst to best
As this revelation has sparked upset from fans, it does feel like HBO Max could have made it clear that there would be a rotating schedule of films before the service launched. Many of the DC films that are leaving HBO Max on July 1 were a large part of the advertising push for the service which, at the time, seemed like they would be permanently on the service (much like Disney+ is doing with its multiple properties).
This news comes just a few weeks after the news that Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League will be coming to the service in 2021. And just before these films leave HBO Max, the second season of Doom Patrol will be premiering simultaneously on HBO Max and DC Universe on June 25.
