How Daredevil’s MCU future could all be thanks to Mysterio

If Daredevil does make his presence felt in Spider-Man 3, could Mysterio be the one responsible for it?

It is almost the motto of the entertainment industry to never try the same thing twice to get the same results, yet Marvel, Sony, and WB have shown us all time and time again that insanity is profitable. “Wow, what a bold statement you have conceived here.” When cavemen beat on rocks nothing happened; It wasn’t until two cavemen beat two different rocks together that it created fire.

This is how one could describe the business in Hollywood when creative ventures between companies who want to profit from licensed intellectual property. Look at the failed Spider-Man projects, for example. Did you know that if Sony could have weathered their differences with Columbia Pictures that we might have got a Spider-Man/Daredevil crossover back in 2003/2004?

Why would I say that now? What could any of this business jargon possibly mean to me? Well, thanks to Disney’s successful acquisition of Marvel and Kevin Fiege’s smooth negotiation skills with Sony, we have yet another opportunity to see something that has never been done before. We have a chance for two big “cavemen” companies to smash rocks together and create fire.

Could the crossover of a lifetime finally happen?

Let’s discuss what we already know about Daredevil and Spider-Man in their current state. Daredevil was canceled by Netflix (along with his Defenders; Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones, and his Marvel Knight’s brother The Punisher) in spite of its popularity. Many viewed this as Netflix’s salty response to Disney throwing in their horse to compete with them for viewership with their own intellectual properties. However, that might not be the end for The Man Without Fear.

Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home have earned a combined worldwide total of over 2 billion dollars. The Marvel Comics wall-crawler is one of cinema’s most lucrative properties, and he’s set to return for his third offering next year. And rumor has it that a certain lawyer could be making his presence felt in said film.

Yes, rumors have taken the web by storm lately, suggesting that Daredevil himself, Matt Murdock, will appear as Peter Parker’s legal representation in the upcoming sequel. Now that Mysterio has outed Peter’s identity to the world, he might just need it. Even Kevin Smith commented on the possibility of Murdock possibly making his way to the MCU in the next installment of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy, voicing his excitement and even suggesting that Charlie Cox could reprise his role.

If you don’t remember, then allow this writer to remind you that Kevin Smith raised the bar and opened doors for screenwriters to enter the comic universe – so the fact that he referenced these rumors certainly got fans excited. Whether or not any of the Netflix show’s other cast members would potentially reprise their roles is a conversation for another day, but today is about thanking the one character who may have made this crossover possible.

You loved to hate him and hated to love him. Not only were his origins so deliciously relevant to Tony Stark’s prominence in the MCU (given all the people he had wronged), but his illusion fooled the audience just as much as it fooled Peter in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Yes, you guessed it, we’re talking about Mysterio.

A Sinister set-up, perhaps?

It is unlikely that we will see the Daredevil persona as the rumors suggest that Matt Murdock will serve as Peter’s legal representation. However, Disney has made a name for itself in laying the foundation before they launch a legendary storyline (after all, this process is how the shared universe eventually topped Avatar at the all-time Box Office with Avengers: Endgame).

Another rumor suggests that Marvel and Sony have already laid the foundation of the next phase of Peter’s character arc, reminding us that the mysterious Shield Agent Demetri could still be the Chameleon – who just so happens to have a step-brother that Marvel and Sony should consider for the next installment Kraven the Hunter.

This could inevitably lead to the long-awaited Sinister Six movie – something that has been attempted several times (with Sony throwing away the first opportunity in the Tobey Maguire trilogy and then tarnishing the second attempt by forcing the set up too soon). Do you have to wonder if they had a group leader who would it be?

If Charlie Cox is to reprise his role as Matt Murdock, it would be the full-circle moment that fans of the Netflix universe have been waiting for. Remember how The Defenders makes reference to the fallout of the New York Incident from The Avengers, or how Night Nurse worked at the Metro-General Hospital (the same workplace as Dr. Stephen Strange and the one thing that connects Dr. Strange and Daredevil).

With that in mind, you have to wonder if Daredevil was indeed taking place during the Spider-Man movies on the other side of town (which would possibly put Wilson Fisk in the same prison as Adrian and Mac Gargan, aka Scorpion).

This would open the floodgates that give Daredevil a reason to seek out Spider-Man – something that has been made that much easier with the outing of his identity, something that Matt himself struggles with even outside his mask. Oh yeah, Mysterio, right? While Mysterio would make a great leader for a possible Sinister Six sequel, his arrival spells opportunity for the Double D of Hell’s Kitchen to make his cinematic debut in the MCU.

Guardian Devil

Like many of you hardcore Marvel fans I don’t believe Mysterio has called for the curtains just yet. I won’t ruin the amazing plot twist for anyone who hasn’t read Kevin Smith’s Guardian Devil, but Mysterio does make an appearance in the eight-issue series. Instead of Marvel and Disney killing off this important villain in the MCU, they should use him along with other characters in the Marvel cast of Avengers like Natasha or Dr. Strange who were also guest-star characters in Guardian Devil to set up a possible Daredevil film.

This would also give Marvel time to set up an easter egg when Wolverine enters the MCU for Bullseye to get his adamantium skeletal structure (as Bullseye was a former adversary of Daredevil’s). After all, he has a date with Karen Page. Die-hard fans may have preferred to experience Karen’s fate as it was in the comics. If you remember the final season of Daredevil which took the iconic church scene right out of the graphic novel, Bullseye was defeated with the help of Karen. Since the creative team decided not to kill the character, we now have an opportunity to do Daredevil’s first film justice – kicking things off with a cameo in the third Spider-Man movie as the titular star passes a reluctant torch to Daredevil – which could be metaphoric for Sony saying thanks to Marvel and Disney for helping them launch Spider-Man into their own Marvel universe (along with Venom).

With elements from the Reborn storyline and a heavy reference to the Guardian Devil story arc, we could see the set up for Shadowlands which would call for the Defenders of the big apple from all over to help bring Matt to his senses – including a close friend in Peter Parker (who is notorious for bringing Matt his boyhood wisdom in the early runs of Daredevil and even at the end of Guardian Devil when he chose to make less than brooding decisions).

From these two adaptations, Disney and Marvel could perhaps then launch Marvel Knights, Defenders, continue the Daredevil series (that could see introductions to new-age heroes like Blindspot), not-to-mention open up the New York of the Marvel Universe to explore other storylines. Karen Page’s funeral in the comics saw the likes of the Fantastic Four in attendance along with some other would-be heroes. Could this be destined to happen on the big screen too?

If we were to get a Daredevil film and/or series continuation, it is likely that it would come after the current line-up of projects going as far as 2025, but the potential is astounding. If the-powers-that-be do follow through and Mysterio is the key for bringing him in, Daredevil could make a splash in a bunch of great ways. And, whether or not the Sinister Six show up eventually, this is an opportunity shouldn’t be wasted.

So how about it Disney, Marvel, and Sony – are you ready to make a fire?
