Zoë Kravitz opened up about the source material she’s learning from for her role as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in The Batman.

Zoë Kravitz is set to star as the one and only Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman reboot The Batman.

An iconic role, no doubt, fans are eager to see what her interpretation of the legendary character’s catsuit looks like. She recently joked how alterations might need to be made to it when they return to production, but she has now spoken at length about the film on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast (via MovieWeb), explaining that we probably would have seen the costume by now if the first half of the year didn’t pan out the way that it did. She said:

"“I think if this hadn’t happened it would have probably come out by now. I love it… It’s funny, I didn’t really think about how difficult it is to make something as simple as a catsuit original… But Jacqueline Durra, who’s our amazing costume designer, is just a genius.”"

Zoë, before going into what was it that inspired her to undertake the role of Catwoman, opened up more about being heavily involved in bringing the costume to life, adding that there are “references to the year of the comic that we’re dealing with”.

She then went on to spill the beans about where she is getting the inspiration from to portray the feline anti-heroine, citing one particular storyline from Batman lore.

"“I’ve been reading the Year One comic. It’s great, it’s super badass.”"

The four-issue comic book limited series Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli was heralded as not only an essential part of the DC character’s publication history, but it is widely considered to be one of Batman’s greatest arcs. It has also influenced a lot of filmmakers and television producers.

Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins drew heavily from the story, while Sam Liu and Lauren Montgomery directed a 2011 animated feature-length adaptation of the comic book. During the fourth season of the FOX series Gotham (helmed by Bruno Heller), the second half of that season was inspired by Year One.

Is Year One the novel that inspired Kravitz’s Catwoman outfit? That remains to be seen, but it does sound like the actress enjoyed learning from that version of Selina!
