Want to see more of the Amazons from Wonder Woman? Director Patty Jenkins is interested in creating an animated show about them.

Though the release of Wonder Woman 1984 has been postponed, news about the DCEU franchise has not dissipated.

Director Patty Jenkins has hinted on plans for a third film and a spin-off featuring the Amazons. However, she revealed in a recent interview with Empire that a possible animated series centred on the Themyscirans is also being considered.

Jenkins didn’t divulge any details about the animated series, but given the decades-long history of the comic book characters, there is plenty of source material for her to work with.

What can we look forward to in the animated Wonder Woman spin-off?

Animated shows allow in-canon stories to stretch their wings and explore the characters across ages and eras. Since the Amazons are virtually immortal, actors can continue voicing them for as long as the show lasts. With an animated spin-off, we may also get to see more Amazons of colour in the foreground, as well as expand the representation of queer characters on Themyscira.

It’s possible that the rumoured Amazon spin-off film could be the launching pad for this show. If the spin-off show goes ahead, can we hope to hear the voices of Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta, Robin Wright as Antiope, Ann Wolfe as Artemis and perhaps even Gal Gadot as Diana Prince? One can hope, but recasting the characters will perhaps be a better option.

More from DCEU

The popularity of the Amazons following the Wonder Woman film has skyrocketed, despite the characters being around in comics since the 1940s. Under Jenkins’ direction, the all-female group of warriors came across as powerful and gifted.

The Amazons appeared in Justice League in a new look that was universally decried by most fans. They are set to feature again in Wonder Woman 1984, in a flashback sequence.

Jenkins recently mentioned that her plans for the third Wonder Woman film were on hold to better reflect the real world.
