Following the episode “Brand New Day” on Agents of SHIELD, Nathaniel Malick has brought SHIELD to its knees. Could Fitz be the key to saving it in the series finale?

Today marks the end for Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD as a 2-hour double bill is about to see the end an era for a the Marvel TV/ABC show that has lasted just three years short of a decade.

Recently, TVLine previewed the finale, particularly the mystery concerning Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and “Diana”, adding that all of our burning questions on those individuals will be addressed on in the upcoming two episodes. But what of the fate of Mack’s team and SHIELD itself?

With that in mind, recapping some of the situation at hand and what it entails, let’s look at the possibility that Simmons and Fitz possibly may be the key to the existence of SHIELD and whether or not this may be a final goodbye for all members of Mack’s team based in the Lighthouse – and to SHIELD itself?

What has happened on Agents of SHIELD season 7 so far?

Since the climax of last season on Agents of SHIELD, the Chronicoms have dictated much of the narrative in this seventh and final season as the age-old, synthetic, partially-robotic and sentient organisms took center stage, seeking to purge SHIELD (and HYDRA by proxy) out of existence.

In the eleventh episode, “Brand New Day”, Nathaniel “Nate” Malick (Thomas E. Sullivan) did the unthinkable and used the information Sibyl (Tamara Taylor) stole to launch a full-on Chronicom space-raid attack to destroy the bases of SHIELD. Before I proceed, this does not mean a final goodbye, but it will be explained at the end.

There are some theories and speculations surrounding not only the fates of the team, particularly, the Chronicom-enhanced LMD Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Nate’s group of anarchists, but let’s focus on Jemma and Fitz for the time being. Between the times Enoch saved Mack’s SHIELD group from a Chronicom Hunter ambush and achieved time-travel to follow them across the many eras of SHIELD and HYDRA’s history Fitz and Jemma were separated once again (for unknown reasons).

Throughout the entire limited of season 7 of Agents of SHIELD, there is something that Jemma suppressed from her memories about Fitz that Nate and the Chronicoms, in particular, are after. It was not until the tenth episode that the youngest son of Gideon Malick discovered that it has something to do with Fitz’s location. Therefore, Jemma is just as important as Fitz as he is communicating with her somehow. The actor playing Fitz – Caestacker – will be guest-starring in the final two episodes, “The End is at Hand” and “What We’re Fighting For.”

How will Fitz play into the finale?

Now, clearly, something has happened to Fitz but he is most definitely still alive – but either he has done gravely, irreversible, damage to himself connecting to the Zephyr or only live long enough to impregnate Jemma so they can provide a forbearer to preserve Deke Shaw (Jeff Ward) and his existence. Jemma and Fitz, as SHIELD agents, aside from Mack (Henry Simmons), are some of the top students at one of the SHIELD Academys and commonly are up to date and privy to some of the current operations of SHIELD. Director Mackenzie could have overseen their missions but would not be aware of the details for Fitz’s safety.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

This writer’s guess is the details of the intelligence agency S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) – a subdivision of SHIELD that deals with extraterrestrial threats that has been foreshadowed before – is the information that needs to be protected including Fitz’s whereabouts.

According to What the Geek, there is some evidence to support these aforementioned theories, although the idea that the information that Sibyl and Chronicom are after is S.W.O.R.D. might be a bit left-field, but they could possibly tie-in with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In terms of the fate of SHIELD, while the core team led by Mack will be dismantled with some members either dying or defecting from the team on their very last mission, there are only one or two members left to carry the torch – Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) being one of them. SHIELD will undoubtedly carry on but may be relegated more to the background (which they arguably as they should be) within the MCU, while S.W.O.R.D. will be the focal point for more of the cosmic side of the franchise.
