Courtney carves her own legacy

After spending the entire season thinking that Starman was her father and using that to justify why he’s never been in her life, it was an obvious gut-punch to Courtney when her real father showed up. Beyond just disproving her theory about being Starman’s daughter, she got to see who her biological father was and he was a scumbag.

Throughout the episode, we see Courtney getting to her lowest point throughout the entire season and it’s genuinely heartbreaking. After thinking for so long that the Cosmic staff chose her because of her relation to Starman, and then it suddenly stops working, that’s a devastating blow. But this leads to one of the most awe-inspiring of the season.

With Barbara and Pat by her side, she picks up the Cosmic staff and it burns brighter than it has ever done before. It’s an absolutely brilliant, tear-inducing moment to see Courtney embracing who she is and her own destiny. Not because of who her father is or isn’t, but because of who she is. To quote a recent film in another franchise, “There are some things more important than blood,” and that is exemplified in this moment for Courtney. She is Stargirl because who she is, not because of the blood running in her veins.
