Supergirl: Being Super

As far as origin stories go, Kara Zor-El has plenty and Supergirl: Being Super is yet another, and it’s absolutely fantastic. This is a YA re-telling of Kara’s origin that takes plenty of notes of Superman’s origin, while putting it into the modern day. Saying it like that doesn’t really do this story justice, but at its most basic level, that’s exactly what it is, which is a good thing.

At its heart, Being Super captures what teenagers have feared most for the past 20 years or so, losing a friend to random acts of violence, the trauma that ensues, and the attempts to move on. There’s friendship, heart-break, hurt, and triumph through this story, which is so expertly told by writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Joelle Jones.

This is a story that will more than likely resonate with anyone who has tragically lost someone, whether the reader be young or old. More than likely though, this will hit hardest for teenagers and those in their early to mid-20s based on what happens in this story, being a much tamer analogy for the fears that many high school and college students have.

And the final page of the story is absolute perfection.
