The Flash producer, Barbara Muschietti, was quite surprised Ben Affleck agreed to reprise his role as Batman in the movie.

When Vanity Fair revealed that award-winning actor, writer and filmmaker Ben Affleck will be reprising his role as Batman in the live-action Flash movie, to say it was a shock to DC fans would be an understatement.

Helmed by Andy Muschietti, The Flash is set to be released in 2022 and it’s loosely based on the Flashpoint storyline by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert. Due to that, the addition of Batman isn’t surprising, but the Batmans that will appear in the film are very surprising.

Andy’s sister, Barbara Muschietti, a frequent collaborator of his who is also producing The Flash, told Vanity Fair how shocked she was that Affleck was attached on the project. On the subject Barbara said:

"“There have been some all sorts of stories and things he said himself about having a very hard time playing Batman, and it had been difficult for him. I think it was more about a difficult time in his life… When we approached him, he’s now in a very different time in his life. He was very open to it, which was a bit of a surprise to us. It was a question mark.”"

Affleck portrayed the Caped Crusader in the DCEU before making an unexpected departure following the failure of Justice League. Muschietti spoke about how this time, there will be less pressure on him, adding:

"“We are all human and go through great times in our lives and terrible times in our lives. Right now he’s in a place where he can actually enjoy being Batman. Plus, he doesn’t have to carry the entire movie. It’s a pivotal role, but at the same time it’s fun part.”"

Affleck will not only be reprising the role as The Dark Knight, but Michael Keaton will also be reprising his role from the 1989 film (and it’s ’92 sequel) and is expected to be involved in a substantial capacity as well.

More from DCEU

The last project Affleck appeared in within the DCEU was Justice League. His iteration of the Batman made his first appearance in the Zack Snyder-directed film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Andy, who was on the panel for the DC FanDome event revealed some concept art of the new suit that Ezra Miller’s Flash will be wearing in the upcoming movie, developed by Bruce Wayne aka Batman. Though you might presume it was designed by Affleck’s Wayne, concept art suggests Keaton’s Dark Knight may have been involved in that process.

Muschietti also teased the storyline from the film’s script by the screenwriter Christina Hodson, which suggests that things are steadily progressing forward.
