Patty Jenkins opens up about Wonder Woman 1984 delays and it’s new release date
Wonder Woman 1984 now will release at Christmas and director Patty Jenkins has opened up about the film’s delays.
Wonder Woman 1984 will now release on Christmas Day, according to director Patty Jenkins.
Originally, the 1980s-set DCEU sequel was scheduled for a release date of December 13, 2019, then it was moved up to November 1, 2019 and then back to June 5, 2020.
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the release date has steadily shifted backwards, from August 14 to October 2 and now to Christmas Day. Director Patty Jenkins spoke to Variety (H/T: Flickering Myth) about the delays and had this to say:
"“Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer. With the new date on Christmas Day, we can’t wait to spend the holidays with you!”"
From the second trailer released not long ago, a significant amount of the story seems to take place in Washington, DC, and Kristen Wiig’s character is obsessed with power, while Diana’s struggles will likely be more internal.

WW84 sees Gal Gadot reprising her DCEU role of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman for the fourth time, going against Kirsten Wiig’s Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah and Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord. Additionally, Robin Wright and Chris Pine are both back as Diana’s aunt Antiope and Steve Trevor, respectively.
For the moment, Wonder Woman 1984 will follow the MCU’s Black Widow as far as release dates go, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters on November 6 (originally May 2). This is an inversion of the respective universe’s first female-led solo movies, as Wonder Woman dropped in June 2017, followed by Captain Marvel in March 2019.
Again, Wonder Woman 1984 will release (for now) on Christmas Day 2020, December 25. Are you looking forward to the film? Let us know in the comments below!
