According to a new rumor, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be joining Tom Holland in the MCU’s Spider-Man 3.

Tom Holland is set to reprise his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s third Spider-Man film. However, he may not be the only wall-crawler that makes his presence felt in that film as, according to a new rumor, he could be joined by not one but two former Spidey stars.

According to FandomWire, both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have signed on to reprise their roles from the separate franchises in the MCU film and their respective heroes will appear to help Holland’s Spider-Man defeat a team of their collective villains.

Maguire portrayed Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s beloved trilogy, starting with Spider-Man in 2002 and reprising the role in the critically-acclaimed follow-up in 2004 and the notorious Spider-Man 3 in 2007. A fourth film was planned but the divisive reception to the third and studio interference all kicked off a chain of events that led to Raimi leaving the project.

Garfield was then cast in the role for Marc Webb’s rebooted The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 and reprised the role in the sequel in 2014. A third film and a spin-off was planned but, again, the underperformance of the film and the divisive response ultimately prompted Sony to start negotiations with Marvel Studios in regards to bringing Peter into the MCU. And that’s when Tom Holland’s webslinger was born.

Are Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield going to return to Spider-Man?

It’s hard not to feel like the MCU is finally ready to introduce the multiverse into existence. It seemed like they were heading in that direction in the previous movie, Spider-Man: Far From Home, when Mysterio actually acknowledged its existence. While that turned out to be a rouse, the upcoming Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness suggests that its arrival is imminent.

Adding fuel to that fire, Doctor Strange himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, will feature in Spider-Man 3, playing a mentor-like role to Peter Parker in the way that Tony Stark, Nick Fury and Happy Hogan did in the previous two films.

The real indicator that the multiverse is at hand is the return of Jamie Foxx – who will be reprising his role as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It’s not yet known if he’ll be playing the same Electro as before, but the possible return of Andrew Garfield certainly suggests that it’s a strong possibility.

While we’ve yet to hear official confirmation as to whether or not Maguire and Garfield are back, you can rest assured that both Spidey and MCU fans are ecstatic at the possibility of seeing all three webslingers unite on screen.
