Rumor: Spider-Slayers to be the villains in Spider-Man 3

A new rumor suggests that Spencer Smythe and the Spider-Slayers are the main antagonists in Spider-Man 3. Could it be true?

According to Murphy’s Multiverse (H/T: The Direct), the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s upcoming Spider-Man 3 could feature one of the lesser-talked about villains from the web-slingers’ rogues gallery. Alongside Jamie Foxx’s Max Dillon/Electro, the film’s antagonists could be Spencer Smythe as well as the Spider-Slayers.

Smythe is a classic adversary of Spider-Man, who was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 No.25 in June 1965. A scientist with expertise in robotics and arachnids, J. Jonah Jameson hired Smythe to capture Spider-Man (who already funded his research). Smythe grew obsessed with taking down the arachnid-imbued superhero.

Are the Spider-Slayers in Spider-Man 3?

According to the report, this character’s link to J.J. would make sense given that J.K. Simmons’ Jameson made a return at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

While Spider-Man 3 is still some time away in terms of release, there have been a lot of rumors about the film’s plot and what fans can expect from it. This rumor is among the most exciting. However, as it has not been officially confirmed, it must be taken as just that: A rumor.

If this is the case, it means Sony will be retreading a potential storyline originally intended for a follow-up to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, involving B.J. Novak’s Alistair Smythe (son of Spencer Smythe) from the Marc Webb series. Currently, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is filming with Benedict Cumberbatch attached to reprise his role as the Sorcerer Supreme himself – Doctor Strange.
