The X-Men have battled and already lost one of their own in X of Swords.

X of Swords has lived up to the hype before the comic book’s main battles started. Rockslide was killed and brought back differently, Logan went to Hell (again), and Storm invaded Wakanda to steal a sacred sword. With all of that, you had to guess something major would happen in the first fight. If you did, pat yourself on the back. Excalibur No. 14 started with a death and ended with a wedding.

At the end of Marauders No. 15, the first battle was drawn. It would be Betsy Braddock versus Isca the Unbeaten. Unbeaten isn’t just a cool name. She’s never been beaten at anything. A loss is one thing, but this fight is to the death. In Excalibur the fight begins and Betsy gets the first strike. Then, Isca breaks Betsy’s sword and she breaks with it. Betsy is left on the floor shattered in colorful pieces. The X-Men are stunned and her brother Brian is heartbroken. There’s nothing the X-Men can do. Betsy lost and now Arakkoa is up one.

Next, it’s Doug Ramsey versus Bei the Blood Moon. What is their fight? No one knows. Not until Doug shows up and Bei is at the altar. They’re getting married! You’re probably as confused as this writer was. The interesting thing is that Doug can’t understand her. She is the first being he’s encountered where he can’t decipher her language – which he found fascinating. Both of them gave beautiful vows and now they’re married. Somehow, Krakoa and Arakko both received a point. The X-Men shouldn’t complain. It beats being down 2-0.

Next up was Magik versus Pogg Ur-Pogg (that name is still funny) in an arm-wrestling match. Magik was up against against dinosaur. Not only was it unfair, Magik lost literally before the contest began.

After that, it was Logan against Summoner in a fight to the death. Logan killed Summoner but he lost because Summoner died. If you’re thinking that this seems fixed, you’re not alone.

This was weird to say the least. Weird, yet fun. And we didn’t even get into Logan having to fight for Arakko. It let the readers know that this wasn’t going to be a bunch of random fights. We’re going to see absurd fights, vicious battles, and maybe even some love. It’s a great idea. Comic book crossovers tend to be predictable. With the X-Men, nothing is predictable – especially not their arcs.

X of Swords isn’t going to be predictable either. It’s refreshing. Who knows what we’ll see next.
