Terence Winter, writer and EP of The Sopranos and creator of Boardwalk Empire, has left HBO Max’s The Batman spin-off.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, The Batman prequel TV series has suffered quite the setback due to the departure of its showrunner. Terence Winter, the mind behind Boardwalk Empire, has departed the spin-off (which is believed to be inspired by DC’s Gotham Central comic books).

The show was announced back in July, along with the fact that it would receive a direct to series order for HBO Max. It is intended to be a companion to Matt Reeves’ Robert Pattinson-led The Batman motion picture and will be set within that depiction of Gotham City, taking place a year before the events of Battinson’s film.

The Batman’s HBO Max series needs a new showrunner

The production team are now reportedly in search of a new showrunner to replace Winter. Sources close to THR have suggested the age-old dilemma of creative differences was the reason behind Winter’s departure, as it seemed that he and Reeves had different ideas for the show.

More from DCEU

Reeves will helm the Gotham Central spin-off and another showrunner will also write the series. As of late, no release date or cast announcements have been made. Furthermore, it has also not yet been established whether Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne/Batman or Jeffrey Wright’s Commissioner Gordon will appear in the series. Fans were certainly hoping for them to appear, and it would certainly make sense for them – particularly the latter – to show up at some point.

Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassan and Dylan Clark are executive producers of the series. Rafi Crohn is co-executive producer. It will be produced under Matt Reeves’ 6th and Idaho Productions in association with Warner Bros. TV. It is expected to drop in the near future on HBO Max.

Centering on a young, but established caped–and–cowl crusader fairly early on in his crime-fighting career, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Jayme Lawson and Peter Sarsgaard.
