Dafne Keen, who portrayed X-23 in Logan, revealed the young berserker was being readied for a spinoff.

2017’s Logan was the swan song for Hugh Jackman’s two-decade run as Wolverine. In the timeline of the film, it served as well as the end of the line for Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his X-Men. Tragic as it was, it would have been a fitting finale for the entire franchise.

As we know, that didn’t happen. Deadpool 2 and Dark Phoenix still had to come out over the next two years, and it took The New Mutants a long time to find a release date that would stick. That last one by itself was an enormous stumbling block to the series going quietly into the night.

But none of those spinoffs were supposed to be the final destination. Fox, before it was acquired lock, stock, and barrel by Disney, intended for there to be more; each one simply failed to launch.

Now, three years on, the world is learning that one of the planned spinoffs was for the silent-but-deadly clone and de facto daughter of Wolverine, Laura Kinney, known better as X-23.

A Logan spin-off may have been in the works

Dafne Keen, who played the young runaway mutant wreaking havoc, dished in an Elle interview what she heard from the studio. Their first step, Keen shared, was to plant a seed but they never followed through:

"“I got told by some people at Fox that there might be another one, but this was ages ago when we were filming, and they haven’t contacted me ever again.”"

Keen believes the story was left hanging with more to explore, adding that she feels like they “were just at the beginning”, that “there’s more to be told, and it’s a relay race.” What that story is, no one knows. If Fox had a script – there were rumors of one – or was just discussing the potential internally is up for debate.

More from Movies

The ultimately unmade Gambit, was plagued by that problem according to Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg. It didn’t have a script despite the fact that narrative loose ends and introducing Channing Tatum and Sinister to the X-Men film universe hinged on the story getting told.

Keen, remarking she was a late addition to filming, concluded that she is game for another installment if the right people come up with something:

"“I come into play when they’ve already written and done pre-production and decided on doing the film, so as soon as they say, ‘go,’ I’ll happily go whenever.”"

If Keen hears “go” it will be from Kevin Feige or somebody at Disney, though the likelihood is extremely slim. The only sequel/spinoff the House of Mouse is moving forward with is Deadpool 3. Ryan Reynolds is returning and a new creative team was recently hired to pen the screenplay, so there is momentum.

Dafne Keen’s immediate future holds more episodes of her hit HBO series His Dark Materials.
