The first trailer for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has been released so what can we expect from the MCU series?

Since their witty banter in Captain America: Civil War, fans couldn’t wait to see more of the dynamic duo of Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and they’re going to get it in Disney Plus‘ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

The show is canon in the MCU world, and is roughly getting the same budget of a Marvel film spread across six episodes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will cost roughly $15-$25 million dollars per episode and from the looks of this trailer, its going to be worth every penny.

Taking place after Avengers: Endgame Steve Rogers’ friends still have battles to fight, and this odd-couple-meets-besties are the perfect pair for the job.

The trailer, which was released at Disney’s Investor Day yesterday gave us more than we could’ve asked for, and are we complaining?

What can we expect from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier?

The trailer opens with a montage of the legacy of Captain America has created and left behind him at what looks to be the Smithsonian. “The legacy of that shield is complicated,” narrates Sam Wilson, before cutting to shots of a man-chase in what fans have deemed to be Madripoor – a fictional island in Southeast Asia (roughly south of Singapore).

“The world is upside down,”  says Bucky Barnes in what looks to be a heart-to-heart scene, “…and people need something to get behind.” which is something that will probably carry some emotional weight. Mind you, this is after Endgame and it’s probably going to take some time for people to revert back to “normal” after half their world dusted away and came back five years later. This new normal is going to be a lot stranger. Sure, the Avengers won, and everyone came back from the dead but… aliens. Aliens exist, and everyone knows this. There is this mass sense of vulnerability that carries over everyone’s head.

Sam knows the legacy Steve Rogers left behind with his Captain America, and Bucky surely senses the similarities of this and World War II when the Earth needed someone to step up to the plate as the new Captain America.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Speaking of World War II, there is a shot of a police sign up with “JUSTIZ” on the shields, which translates to “Justice” in German… chances of our dynamic duo heading to Germany? This is also a nod to Civil War as the Sokovia Accords were signed in Germany. While Falcon and The Winter Soldier is setting its own storyline, the Germany location of the subplot would also be a good way to bring in Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), and of course, the infamous Zemo (Daniel Brühl) from Civil War who we have some history with.

One of my personal favorites is the similarities of Steve Rogers’ Captain America and Sam Wilson. Bucky and Sam are up in a helicarrier, as Bucky begs to ask the question, “So what’s our plan?” In one shot, both Bucky and Sam are up in a plan “So no plan…great” before Sam jumps out the bay door before engaging in a beautifully choreographed aerial fight scene.

So, while there are certain nods to Steve Rogers’ Captain America, this trailer shows that Sam Wilson is bringing his witty humor, and love for his country to the table. He is fighting the good fight and that is something that is worth acknowledging.

If there is one thing that’s for certain, there is no “old Capitan America” and “new Captain America,” Sam Wilson is Captain America. In the same way that Natalie Portman isn’t “Lady Thor,” she is Thor.

Directed by Kari Skogland, the six-episode original Disney+ series will be hitting the Disney+ platform on March 19th. You can sign up for Disney+ here.
