Batman turns a former rival and enemy into an ally in Batman issue No. 105

The last couple of years seem to have been more tiring than normal for Batman. There was the engagement, breakup, and reunion for him and Catwoman, his father from another reality tried to destroy his life, Bane took over Gotham and killed Alfred and The Joker started a war, took his money, resurrected Alfred, and left Bruce Wayne looking like an embezzler. We haven’t even gotten into The Batman who Laughs turning Jim Gordon into a darker version of himself. After so much going on, Batman deserves a break. He may have finally received one. But not before he was tested.

At the end of Joker War, a mysterious figure named Ghost-Maker appeared. He said their truce of staying out of each other’s city was over. Eventually, we found out that Ghost-Maker and Bruce have a past: They trained together and, at one point, they were friends. They even had the same kind of mission – except Bruce’s was based on a promise he made as an eight year old and Ghost-Maker’s was more about, as he said, “sake of the task.” This eventually put them on a collision course.

Who is the newest member of the Bat-Family?

As predicted, Batman and Ghost-Maker fought. In the end, Batman laid down his weapon and the battle ended prematurely. It seemed disappointing until the next moment when Batman asked Ghost-Maker to stay in Gotham and help him. Bruce admitted that he needed help – something he rarely does. He said that he was getting older and doesn’t have a lot of his old resources. Ghost-Maker agreed to help and to not kill anyone.

More from Batman

Batman is lucky. At the end of the issue, Ghost-Maker reminded him of that, commenting that he’s richer than he is. With Bruce’s fortune unavailable to him, he can go back to having his gadgets and vehicles made like he used to. That’s the good news. The bad news is we have to ask how long this lasts.

Ghost-Maker doesn’t seem to enjoy keeping criminals alive. How long until he goes back to his old way of heroism? What if some of the other members of the Bat-Family start to agree with Ghost-Maker’s way of thinking? We know that Red Hood and Harley Quinn may be all for it. Orphan (Cassandra Cain) and Spoiler (Stephanie Brown) may agree as well. This is something that we’ll have to pay close attention to over the next year or so.
