The top 10 best Marvel and DC comics of 2020
By Scott Brown
8. Black Widow by Kelly Thompson & Elena Casagrande
Only four issues into this series, and not even done with its first story arc, and it’s already one of the most interesting Black Widow stories of the past two decades. Because the series is so new, there won’t be any spoilers contained here but, to put it simply, this series takes Natasha Romanov somewhere that she hasn’t been before. That may seem like a cliché saying at this point, but it’s very much true about this series. It’s a series that is incredibly intriguing with every new issue and manages to end on a fantastic cliffhanger, making you just beg for more. Thompson’s trademark humor and heart are also very much present here, but she isn’t afraid to tear you heart out either.
Elena Casagrande’s art on this series is also sublime. She completely nails every single issue from beginning to end. Whether it’s a fight scene, of which she’s done several mind-blowingly great ones so far, or smaller, more intimate moments, her art is stunning. She brings this new world of Black Widow to life in a way that not many (if any) other artists would be able to do. Even if the story wasn’t interesting – which it is – this series would be worth reading for the art alone.
