The fate of The CW’s Arrow spin-off Green Arrow and The Canaries has finally been revealed.

Green Arrow and The Canaries will unfortunately not be going ahead at The CW, Deadline has revealed. The Arrowverse spin-off was announced last January but, after a year of waiting, it has been revealed that the network has passed on the series.

The series would have starred Arrow leading lady Katie Cassidy, Katherine McNamara and Juliana Harkavy – all of whom had prominent roles throughout the show’s run. It was originally pitched to the network through a backdoor pilot episode that took place during the ninth episode of Arrow season 8 and featured all three ladies at the forefront.

Why was Green Arrow and The Canaries cancelled?

It’s unknown why Green Arrow and the Canaries isn’t moving ahead at the network but some Arrow stars theorized a while back that the momentum could have been disrupted by the outbreak of the novel coronavirus last year.

There was indeed a lot of forward momentum to begin with. The backdoor pilot, also titled “Green Arrow and The Canaries”, aired on The CW earlier this year (January 21) as the penultimate episode of Arrow‘s final season. It received acclaim from fans and critics and ultimately became the most-watched non-crossover episode of the season – surpassing even the series finale. Understandably, fans have campaigned for the network to pick it up ever since.

More from Arrowverse

Though The CW remained tight-lipped about its decision for nearly six months, the network’s president and CEO Mark Pedowitz revealed during the schedule unveiling that both Green Arrow and The Canaries and The 100‘s spin-off prequel were still “very much alive”. Weeks later, former Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim assured fans that they would hear a decision “very, very soon”.

The episode saw Laurel Lance (Cassidy) turn up in Star City 2040 and recruit old enemy-turned-ally Dinah Drake (Harkavy) before confronting Oliver Queen’s daughter Mia Queen (McNamara) with the memories of her deleted pre-Crisis On Infinite Earths timeline. Together, the trio sought to carry on the legacy that Team Arrow started – with Mia becoming her father’s successor as the Green Arrow and the Black Canaries riding again.

Fans will understandably be heartbroken that the spin-off is not going ahead, particularly as the characters’ arcs weren’t wrapped up. Perhaps we’ll see the characters pop up on other Arrowverse shows. Goodness knows fans have been campaigning for Katie Cassidy to join Legends of Tomorrow for the longest time. Maybe now is that time.

Nonetheless, Green Arrow and the Canaries should have been picked up and it’s a darn shame that it wasn’t.
