Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of the Merc with the Mouth is confirmed to be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with an R-Rating attached to the project.

Kevin Feige has confirmed that Marvel Studios will be continuing the story of Ryan Reynolds’ titular character in Deadpool 3 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

During an interview with Collider, Feige provided promising updates on Deadpool’s third solo outing, with the Marvel Studios head promising that the film will be fully based within the MCU. As Collider confirms:

"“When Deadpool 3 happens, it won’t be as some tangentially related property with a couple of jokes about the MCU. Ryan Reynolds’ foul-mouthed mercenary is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and he’ll be keeping his R-rating.”"

This is huge news for fans of the character, as many were skeptical about whether the film would be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Reynolds confirmed over a year ago that Marvel Studios were working on the title, fans were still left wondering if Deadpool would be in his own separate universe.

This news gives fans the hope to see Deadpool crossover with numerous main players in the MCU, with many excited in particular over the potential of a crossover with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man due to the pair’s chemistry in the comics.

However, while the news of Deadpool joining the cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is exciting, Feige’s confirmation of an R-Rating for the film is even more exciting. As he told Collider:

"“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”"

The R-Rating and the use of violence, foul language and humour are all staples of the Deadpool character, and it is relieving to hear that Marvel Studios and co. are very serious in keeping the character in his element. An R-Rating allows Deadpool to showcase his full potential, as showcased within his first two films which were both major successes.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

While the character can work in a PG13 environment, the character’s solo adventures are often violent and full of R-Rated elements in the comics. So, keeping the rating seems fitting.

Marvel Studios seem to also be taking the project seriously, as Feige confirmed they are consulting Ryan Reynolds with the screenplay. It is known that Reynolds is passionate about the character, and it is difficult to see anyone else portraying Deadpool as brilliantly as Reynolds.

While the film will not be released until 2023 at the earliest, due to a number of other projects already slated to release in the next couple of years, it is exciting to hear Feige give fans an update on the project.

Deadpool 3 will likely begin filming in 2022, and is being penned by Bob Burger’s writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin. However, don’t be surprised if we see Reynolds in the costume before the release of the third film due to the meta nature of the character.
