What would the world be like without the Avengers? Marvel Comics has the answer.

Marvel Comics always finds a way to keep their stories interesting. They shake things up to keep people guessing. This time, that shaking up is going to directly affect the Avengers – so much so, that they don’t exist.

Marvel has just announced the series Heroes Reborn. In this series, Blade wakes up to finds out the Avengers never actually existed. In this world, Captain America died in World War II, Tony Stark never got trapped in a cave and created his Iron Man armor, Carol Danvers never became Captain Marvel, and Thor never lifted the hammer.

All of the above is just what Blade explained in the trailer. However, there is so much going on in the background.

Dr. Doom has the power of the Juggernaut (because that’s what Doom needed), Wolverine never left Canada and appears to be on Alpha Flight (complete with Shaman being the Sorcerer Supreme) and, in place of the Avengers is the Squadron Supreme with Phil Coulson in charge. There were also images of Thanos (with what appears to be vampire teeth) with the Infinity Gauntlet and the Hulk choking something and smiling.

It appears that some things remained the same in this universe but that others are going to look completely different.

Is Mephisto responsible for the Avengers’ fates in Heroes Reborn?

Mephisto is caged in Las Vegas and even though it seemed like he had no way of getting out, readers knew this wouldn’t stick. He’s been planning things to ruin the Avengers, whispering in Namor’s ear to make him hate his former friends, working with Phil Coulson to make the Squadron Supreme the premiere team in America (and hate the Avengers). This is on top of him setting things in motion with the Vampires and the Winter Guard. He’s been busy while he’s been locked up. There’s also everything he’s done in the timestream.

Mephisto has been mucking about in the timestream in Jason Aaron’s Avengers. Tony Stark was sent back in time. During his time there, Mephisto had a talk with him and tried to persuade Tony to side with him. The devilish figure claimed that Tony’s adoptive father, Howard Stark, promised Tony to him. Obviously, Iron Man declined and fought him.

While Tony and Mephisto battled, the Avengers from one billion B.C. watched. The Phoenix said that they couldn’t intervene and that Tony has to win this fight on his own. With everything Mephisto has been doing since the start of this arc, is the world without Avengers part of his plan?

Mephisto is devious. Whatever he’s been planning by taking souls and manipulating beings throughout time could be the reason for a world where the Avengers never existed. With that, why is Blade the only one who remembers everything? This is reminiscent of Wolverine in House of M. Did fate put Blade on a team he’d normally never be part of? With all of these questions, May can’t come soon enough.
