Rick Flag actor and star of two Suicide Squad movies, Joel Kinnaman, is showing his support for director David Ayer’s cut of the first film.

The completion of The Snyder Cut of Justice League would not have happened without the vocal support of fans and that of cast members like Jason Momoa, Joe Manganiello, and the man tapped for the voice of Darkseid, Ray Porter. If the Ayer Cut of fellow DCEU movie Suicide Squad is to have any hope of seeing similar progress, it needs some serious players to get behind it.

Fortunately for the fandom already raising awareness, that’s beginning to happen and they can count star of the 2016 film Joel Kinnaman among those high-profile supporters. The actor stated on The Playlist Podcast he wants to see Ayer’s original vision restored and that “it’s… a shame” audiences missed out on it. He commented:

"“You always wanna see the filmmaker’s cut, you know? It’s always a shame when the filmmaker’s vision doesn’t make it to the cinema.”"

Continuing, he singled out compromise and studio interference, adding that “there’s always going to be compromise,” and that he finds that “the bigger the budget, the bigger the compromise.”

Something he believes compromise cheated moviegoers out of was the fullness of Jared Leto’s performance as The Joker, which didn’t play out as intended, said Kinnaman:

"“I’m sure [Ayer’s cut] would be much more interesting. David’s take on the Joker was really interesting and that didn’t really come out in the movie that we saw.”"

We may never see how Leto’s Joker was really supposed to turn out as Warner Bros. has no plans right now to finish and put out the Ayer Cut. The studio could very well be sitting on the remaining footage, however.

Will the Snyder Cut influence the release of the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad?

Ayer, who’s been clear about what was left out, proved there is unused footage and more with The Joker when he recently shared a short clip of Leto in a tux with a charred face telling someone – probably Harley Quinn – that they “should be ashamed.”

Leto will get the chance to shine again as The Clown Prince of Crime in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and Snyder is another party showing support for David Ayer and his vision. He said the following on John Doe Movie Reviews:

"“I haven’t talked to David about it, but I’m sure I will. I know him quite well… Like, I support any filmmaker who needs to get their version of their movie or their vision sort of seen, because I’ve had such generous support. So, I really would hope that other people would get that same thing.”"

Snyder’s Cut of Justice League debuts in March on HBO Max while Joel Kinnaman reappears as Rick Flag in the James Gunn-directed soft reboot The Suicide Squad this August. Like Justice League, The Suicide Squad is getting an HBO Max premiere.
