Peter Quill and Yondu had a weird relationship. Peter looked at him as his captor. To Yondu, Peter was his son. Someone that he saved from being eaten (which he brought up repeatedly) and from his biological father, Ego.
No matter what happened between them, Yondu wouldn’t kill Peter. He had a soft spot for him. He may threaten to, but Yondu would never go through with it. In Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, the two shared a special moment. One that started as a joke from Peter, but ended with him looking at Yondu in a different light.
Yondu saying, “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all” was funny. On the surface, it appeared like a joke. The next time you watch that scene, look at Peter’s face right after Yondu asked if Mary Poppins was a bad-***. It was like Peter was seeing him for the first time. He was admiring the sacrifices he made for him currently and in the past.
Originally, this was going to be put in the joke category. Then this writer re-watched the scene. This was more than a joke. It’s an underrated emotional moment between a father and son. Like Yondu said, “He (Ego) may have been your father, boy, but he wasn’t your daddy.” He’s right. That title belongs to Mary Poppins, y’all.
