Episode 9 of WandaVision was a jaw-dropping finale but the show also may have unveiled the MCU’s next Thanos-level threat.

WandaVision was a maze of madness wrapped inside a conundrum and tied up with a quaint little mystery on the surface. The Disney Plus show reinvigorated the Marvel Cinematic Universe and confirmed that there is life after Thanos’ snap and life after Avengers: Endgame.

Naturally, fans have been wondering if the show would introduce us to the big purple meanie’s successor. Well, after episodes of teasing, it seems WandaVision may have done just that. Or, at the very least, made reference to the villain of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

It’s all very confusing and not very clear at the moment, but here’s what we do know.

Who is Chthon in WandaVision and is he the MCU’s next main villain?

In the closing sequence of WandaVision (you know, the one after all of the credits), we saw Wanda astral projecting as the Scarlet Witch within reading the Darkhold while the human version of her made some tea.

More from Disney Plus

As Agatha Harkness pointed out, the Darkhold is the Book of the Damned and it contains a whole chapter devoted to the Scarlet Witch. Marvel Comics fans will know that, in the source material Chthon is a demonic Elder God known for being the world’s first practitioner of black magic. He was also the primary author of the Darkhold.

Upon Wanda’s reveal of herself in true Scarlet Witch form, Agatha looked at her with fight and told her that she didn’t know what she had done before later going on to tell her that she had no idea what she unleashed. And it seems Agatha could be right.

Is Wanda the MCU’s next Big Bad villain?

If Chthon wrote a whole chapter on the Scarlet Witch and knew everything there is to know about a being that hadn’t even been born at that time – unless, of course, there is a Scarlet Witch per generation (but then Agatha surely would have come across previous ones, right?) – will he be drawn out of whatever dark cavern of the underworld he resides in?

Wanda looked pretty demonic when she was studying the Darkhold, so could she end up bringing him up to the MCU? Or worse, could she become the villain after being poisoned with darkness? Is this what will ultimately lead to Doctor Stephen Strange getting involved in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Whatever happens, it appears Chthon is on the horizon. As for if it’s just for Doctor Strange 2 or a new magical era of the MCU? Well, that remains to be seen.

All episodes of WandaVision are now available on Disney+.
