Bringing in Jennifer Lawrence to play Sue Storm in a Fantastic Four movie could be a mistake.
Jennifer Lawrence made her comic book movie debut as Raven Darkholme/Mystique in X-Men: First Class. She went on to play that role three more times for the 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. While there, her performance had mixed reviews.
This writer wasn’t the biggest fan of her portrayal of the character. Now, it certainly wasn’t because Jennifer Lawrence herself. It was down to the fact that the creative team didn’t portray the Mystique that a lot of us wanted.
We wanted what we saw from Rebecca Romijn – more villain and less heroics. The prequel movies opted for something different and even though that doesn’t make it a poor portrayal, it still feels like a missed opportunity. Of course, it could also just be that people have a difference of opinion.
Is Jennifer Lawrence portraying Sue Storm in Fantastic Four?
That brings us to the most recent Marvel Studios gossip. There were recently rumors that suggested Jennifer Lawrence was preparing to play Susan Storm in the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s Fantastic Four project as she was reportedly traveling to Australia to begin filming. Those rumors were seemingly debunked simply because the movie wasn’t anywhere near ready to start filming yet. And yet, there is still that question of whether she could play the role in the future.
It feels like just yesterday that Tatiana Maslay revealed she was not going to play Jennifer Walters a.k.a. She-Hulk in the upcoming Disney Plus project (this was after reports confirmed she would appear in it). Around a month later, Maslany herself confirmed that she would, in fact, be playing the Sensation She-Hulk. Before that, Paul Rudd denied being cast as Scott Lang. Two Ant-Man movies and few other MCU appearances later and we know how that played out.
With that in mind, will Jennifer Lawrence be cast? Does she have any desire to play another comic book character? Again, a lot of these rumors have since been debunked but, still, the question remains.
Regardless, this writer says Jennifer Lawrence isn’t the right pick for Sue Storm.
Why Jennifer Lawrence isn’t the right pick
Jennifer Lawrence has proven that she’s great at what she does. She’s been a box office success in the Hunger Games franchise and a winner of both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. And, as much as this writer did not enjoy Mother, she was one of the only bright spots in that movie. However, when we look at Jennifer Lawrence, do we see Susan Storm? The formidable Invisible Woman?
With three Fantastic Four movies being looked at as disappointments, this next project has to be cast carefully. If there’s any inclination that the project is anything less than perfect, it will be criticized – possibly harsher than anything else. We’ve been burned by the Fantastic Four movies before – especially in the 2015 reboot in which everything was atrocious.

Marvel Studios has a chance to start the franchise from scratch – something fans of the Fantastic Four have wanted for a long time – and introduce the perfect live-action version of Marvel’s First Family.
Casting Jennifer Lawrence so soon after her role in the X-Men movies could risk making audiences skeptical of the franchise as a whole – especially one with a movie history like the Fantastic Four. After all, the last couple of X-Men movies were box office failures and Dark Phoenix is one of the most critically-reviled modern day superhero movies. This doesn’t mean that Jennifer Lawrence won’t fit in any other comic book role. Just not this one.
With so much riding on the Fantastic Four, Marvel Studios can’t afford to get this wrong. Another failure could mean no Doctor Doom or Galactus – two characters that everyone wants to see in the MCU. No, they need to start completely fresh to get this right.
