From Miami to Gotham, the long-gestating Batgirl project has finally found its directors.

In an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, it has been revealed that Bad Boys for Life directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, have finalized a deal with Warner Bros. and will now be taking the helm of Batgirl.

The pair will be joining DC Films writing veteran Christian Hodson, who wrote the script for Birds of Prey and The Flash, as she writes the screenplay for Batgirl. This long in-development project will reportedly be heading to HBO Max and be an exclusive for the service.

What is Batgirl going to be about?

As of right now, it’s unclear as to which Batgirl the film will focus on but it will more than likely be Barbara Gordon – who was the second (after the character named Bette Kane originated the mantle) and most notable character to carry the mantle.

The third Batgirl, Cassandra Cain, was actually already introduced in the DCEU in Birds of Prey, albeit heavily changed from her comics counterpart in that the only thing they share is a name. Meanwhile, the fourth Batgirl, Stephanie Brown, was also just introduced into live-action recently, albeit on the small-screen, in Batwoman.

More from DCEU

Of these four, Barbara has had the most long-lasting and mainstream appeal so odds are that she will be the character used for the Batgirl film.

It is also unclear as to whether this film will be taking place in the same universe as Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the main DCEU continuity or be a completely separate entity like Joker.

However, if it takes place within Reeves’ universe (that is set to begin with The Batman), Erin Kelleyman would be an excellent choice to play Barbara. She’d be an excellent choice in general, but the path has already been laid specifically in that universe. However, the universe placement is still unclear as of now.
