Marvel just dropped a huge bombshell about the future of the X-Men
By Mark Lynch
The first issue of X-Men suggests that the Resurrection Protocols may not be a secret forever. What does the future hold for the Mutants?
One of the first problems that the mutants of Krakoa solved in the pages of Marvel Comics was figuring out a way to cheat death. Considering how often they and the X-Men die, this makes sense.
With the help of The Five (Egg, Elixir, Hope Summers, Proteus, and Tempus), mutants can be brought back to life. After they’re brought back, Charles Xavier uses Cerebro to give them their memories back. It’s almost like they never left. What happens to their souls, however, is still a mystery – one that Nightcrawler may figure out in the Way of X series.
The public doesn’t know about the resurrection protocols. It’s understandable that Krakoa would keep this secret. If the rest of the world found out that they could bring back the dead, everyone would want a piece of this. Everyone would want to be brought back to life after dying or for their loved ones to be returned to them. There would also be people of religious faiths who may call this blasphemous. And the fear from their capabilities might give some another reason to hate mutants.
Well, the cat may be out of the bag very soon as there is a chance that the world may soon know that Krakoans can be resurrected.
Who knows about the X-Men’s resurrection protocols?
In the first few pages of Gerry Duggan’s run of X-Men, reporter and part-owner of the Daily Bugle Ben Urich questions Cyclops. He reveals that he was on scene when Jumbo Carnation was found dead. However, Ben also hints that he knows Jumbo is alive. Cyclops plays coy and denies it by not answering the question.

But that didn’t stop the mystery from continuing because, at the end of the issue, a mysterious figure says that before they destroy Krakoa, they must know how mutants are resurrecting the dead.
Gerry Duggan is a name that we can trust. He’s written Deadpool, Uncanny Avengers, and is currently writing Cable and Marauders. All of them are incredible reads. The way his run of X-Men started shows that this title is in good hands post-Jonothan Hickman.
Now we have to wonder who will find out and what they’ll do next. When that happens, will Xavier have to erase their memories to keep it a secret? It’s not like he’s against doing it. Whatever happens going forward, the X-Men and the mutants of Krakoa will probably be dealing with the aftermath for a long time.
