Marvel reveals why Thor is giving up Mjolnir in game-changing announcement

Thor is giving up Mjolnir so he can become a better King of Asgard.

When people think of Thor, a few things come to mind. He’s the God of Thunder, blonde, and he wields the mighty hammer Mjolnir. The latter may be the thing he’s most recognized for. The Odinson has used Mjolnir in battle to defeat his foes for an untold amount of years. Together, they’ve saved Asgard, the universe, and the future of all the gods (see Jason Aaron’s Thor: Godbomb for more on that).

After Marvel‘s Original Sin, Thor found himself unworthy of Mjolnir. Soon after, Jane Foster became Mighty Thor. Fast forward five years later and we come to The War of the Realms in which the Odinson becomes worthy of Mjolnir again and Odin names him the new King of Asgard. During Thor: Devourer King, the God of Thunder began having problems controlling Mjolnir. This led him to try and switch places with Donald Blake. That didn’t work.

Why Thor no longer uses Mjolnir

In Thor No. 15, it looks like the Odinson has figured out what the problem is: Mjolnir is made for a warrior. The Odinson is still a fighter, but he’s not a warrior; he’s now a king. The last thing he says before the issue ends is, “I shall remain Asgard’s king. But… I am afraid… I can no longer be its hammer.” He then leaves Mjolnir on the table at Avengers Mountain and walks away.

There are a few things to unpack here. First, is he no longer that? When Jane Foster held that title, she was Thor and the God of Thunder. Thor, meanwhile, was just simply Odinson. Unlike the last time, it has nothing to do with not being worthy. His position in life has caused things to change. Does that mean his name will change as well? Second, will this start a search for someone worthy of Mjolnir? If so, who’s actually worthy? Loki, Iron Man, and a random mechanic all lifted Mjolnir in the past. Does this mean anybody can?

Jason Aaron’s run of Thor shows that he does wield the hammer again. What we don’t know is how far into the future this happens. This series could conclude with Odinson in control of Mjolnir once again. Or, it could end up in the hands of someone else. All we know is the King of Asgard has given up Mjolnir and its power may be up for grabs.
