Nightwing director Chris McKay discusses the latest in regards to the mysterious DCEU film.

With James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad about to hit theaters in the United States next month, the DC Extended Universe is continuing to evolve. There are plenty of planned movies on the DCEU horizon but not all of those projects have seen the light of day yet. One such property is Nightwing.

Announced back in 2017, there was a ton of excitement about the prospect of a movie centered on Dick Grayson, the former Boy Wonder, as he presumably evolved from Robin into NightwingThe Lego Batman Movie‘s Chris McKay was even tapped to develop the film but there hasn’t been any kind of forward momentum with the project since.

Is the Nightwing movie still happening?

Fresh off directing the Chris Pratt-led The Tomorrow War, McKay spoke to The Bear Cave (H/T: CinemaBlend) to discuss what has become of the film.

According to McKay, the standalone Nightwing movie remains in limbo, not currently in development but not officially cancelled either.

He also went into detail on what fans could potentially expect from the film and how the details had yet to be fully determined, particularly in regards to Batman’s role in the film. He commented:

"“There was still some stuff that was needed to be determined of what that was going to look like… It was like you were picking up a Nightwing comic. You’re not guaranteed Batman was going to show up, but again you’re dealing with Nightwing and that’s what I like about it. I like the idea of, we don’t necessarily connect to certain things, we can just have it be a story that takes place in Blüdhaven or with Dick Grayson and his world. How he became Nightwing and why he became Nightwing there was a lot of stuff I liked about the approach.”"

From that, it seems that an appearance from The Dark Knight was not assured but that his overarching presence would perhaps be felt throughout.

More from DCEU

Moreover, the director also referred to the potential film as a “character study” – a concept that should be familiar to fans of DC’s Titans as the DC Universe/HBO Max series has explored how Brenton Thwaites’ Dick Grayson handles his transition from Robin into Nightwing as team leader of the Titans.

While it is not certain when a Nightwing movie will happen nor how it will link with the larger DCEU, it is important to note that the film has not been cancelled and that it could still go ahead at some point in the future.
