A new report suggests that Barry Allen will be facing off against an enemy pretty close to home in The Flash.

Production on The Flash kicked off earlier this summer, much to the relief of many fans who thought the DCEU movie might never get made.

Since then, set photos have emerged that confirm various aspects of the film, including a legendary Batman return, a new Supergirl and a Batcycle. However, it seems that some of these set photos may have given us our first look at the movie’s villain (even though we didn’t know that at the time).

There has been a lot of speculation as to whom the main antagonist of the very first live-action motion picture featuring DC’s Scarlet Speedster is, and according to a new report from The Direct, the identity of the Big Bad is… The Flash himself. And no, not just figuratively. The actual protagonist, Barry Allen is reportedly playing the central villain of the film. Well, a version of him, that is.

According to a source close to the media outlet, the speedster will essentially be a “Dark Flash” – a sinister version of Allen himself from an alternate reality.

The Emergence of “Dark Flash” in The Flash?

There were previous online rumors that teased the existence of a “Black Flash.” Whether or not this Flash is the darker personification of death from the Speed Force like the comics or an original depiction of Black Flash is not known but, at this point, everything must be taken with a grain of salt.

Last month, those set photos surfaced from a shoot in London which displayed actor Ezra Miller performing with a stand-in, which does indeed suggest that a less-than-friendly counterpart could be running around. The pair did appear to be in deep conversation, but this did not disperse fan speculation in regards to who the other Barry Allen was.

Flashpoint differences in Comics and Film

Now, if this report about another Barry Allen is indeed true (which the set photos do seem to at least confirm), that means that, instead of going up against his archenemy Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash, the Scarlet Speedster may face off against a shadow-self, so to speak, marking a drastic change from the Flashpoint comic that it is adapting.

The other key difference is that, instead of Thomas Wayne being Batman in this new universe, we are getting an older Bruce Wayne (played by Michael Keaton) set in the universe of Tim Burton’s Batman movies. Additionally, another different version of Batman will be featured at some point in the movie and this one will be portrayed by Ben Affleck.

Struck by a bolt of lightning during an uncanny electrical storm, a forensics student evolves into the Fastest Man Alive. The Flash stars Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Ron Livingston, Kiersey Clemons, Maribel Verdú, Sasha Calle and Rudy Mancuso.

Andy Muschietti is directing from a screenplay by Christina Hodson, Barbara Muschietti and Michael Disco is producing, Marianne Jenkins is serving as executive producer under The Disco Factory in association with Double Dream and DC Films. Warner Bros. Pictures is set to distribute.

The Flash is set to exit the Speed Force and hit theatres Nov. 4, 2022.
