A rumored continuation of the 90s X-Men animated show was confirmed and announced for streaming on Disney Plus Day.

It started with demand from fans executive producers who fondly remember the show. That evolved into a rumor that quickly paid off on Disney Plus Day and an animated follow-up to the hit X-Men cartoon from the 1990s is verifiably part of Disney’s upcoming streaming Marvel slate.

D Day

Disney announced the revival which will be titled X-Men ’97  during the rollout of their D+ Day showcase which gave fans and subscribers a bevy of trailer releases and confirmation of new Marvel content in production.

Per Disney’s social media and promotional art, the all-new but familiar series is penciled in for a 2023 debut. It will be the first time the X-Men are worked into Marvel TV and film under the Disney banner.

Voices of the Atom

According to TheWrap, much of the original voice cast that worked on that first series that aired on Fox Kids between 1992 and ’97 is expected to return. This includes Cal Dodd who played Wolverine, Catherine Disher who played Jean Grey, and George Buza who was the voice of Beast.

Buza has never been far from the X-Men brand, making periodic appearances in live-action films and programming inspired by the mutants, including 20th Century Fox’s first movie in 2000 and the syndicated TV series Mutant X.

Noticeably MIA is the voice of Professor Xavier, Cedric Smith. Said to be retired, Xavier might get recast or could sit on the sidelines altogether. If they are picking up where the ’90s left off, it’s possible the Prof. – felled in the finale by a psionic device – remains somewhere in space under the care of the Shi’ar.

Sadly, Canadian actors David Hemblen and Norm Spencer won’t return to respectively voice Magneto and Cyclops as both men passed away in 2020.

X-Men: New Brood

Newcomers being welcomed to the cast that may fill vacant roles are Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, AJ LoCascio.

X-Men: The Animated Series writers Eric and Julia Lewald and director Larry Houston will serve as consultants on X-Men ’97 alongside new head writer Beau DeMayo (The Witcher), supervising director Jake Castorena, and supervising producer Charley Feldman.

Next. What If...? underscores an expansive and prolific Marvel Cinematic Universe. dark

This is some exciting news, so tell us if you can’t wait for X-Men ’97 in 2023.
