Spoilers ahead of Batwoman season 3 episodes 12 and 13

The Bat team has been up against Marquis Jet for quite some time in Batwoman season 3, and it seems that they’ll be racing against the clock to stop him once again in the finale, “Are We Having Fun Yet?”

It’s been his mother Jada’s hope that he can be saved. Though his body count is racking up, she’s determined to return Marquis to the person he once was before Joker’s interference. To do that, they’ll need to use Joker’s Joy Buzzer.

The problem, however, is Marquis doesn’t want to be saved and the ace up his sleeve in the finale looks to be a nod toward a Batman classic involving another iconic Joker move.

Here’s what we know!

Will Joker’s Balloons appear on Batwoman season 3?

The official synopsis for the finale is as follows:

"In the explosive season three finale, Batwoman (Javicia Leslie) and a panicked Bat Team (Nicole Kang, Camrus Johnson) must race against the clock as Marquis’s (Nick Creegan) nefarious plan balloons into something Gotham would never have suspected…and won’t see coming. Joining forces with Jada (Robin Givens), Ryan, Mary, Luke and Sophie (Meagan Tandy) must call on every skillset they possess to save the city. As more about Marquis’s shocking, twisted past unravels, a final stand-off between brother and sister puts Ryan’s life – and new love – on the line. And as Alice (Rachel Skarsten) reaches her breaking point, an empathetic Mary makes another appeal on behalf of her sister for the Joker’s buzzer, but everyone wonders – is Alice beyond saving?"

Notice the word “balloons.” While that could be simple play on words, it also could be a cheeky wink at Marquis’ plan that’s an homage to 1989’s Batman. In the movie, Jack Nicholson’s Joker uses balloons to gas Gotham’s citizens with smylex. The poisonous gas causes people to laugh uncontrollably. A high enough dose can kill someone.

Joker is a villain that wants to put a smile on his victim’s faces by any means necessary. His version of fun and games usually results in murder and mayhem. He’s also a performer who loves having an audience for his madness. What better way to bring Gotham to its knees than through laughter?

We saw a glimpse of the smylex gas in “We’re All Mad Here” when Marquis used it against Alice so that he could ferry her away to bear witness to his roulette game designed to determine how he’d kill each member of the Black Glove Society that he kidnapped.

There’s no guarantee that Joker’s Balloons will make an appearance in the Batwoman season 3 finale, but it seems to be a possibility.

The promo for the episode is shaped around the potential reveal of Ryan’s alter ego but that could be a red herring to camouflage what he’s really up to. Marquis does say he plans to shout Batwoman’s identity from the rooftops and, while he could be speaking figuratively, that doesn’t seem to be the case considering the public is gathering in the street.

We’ll have to tune in to the finale to find out what’s really going on but something tells us, all isn’t what it seems when it comes to Marquis threat.
