Batwoman season 3 spoilers: Will Mary give Alice the Joy Buzzer? (speculation)

Batwoman season 3 has been quite the ride that’s consistently been focused on family. The lengths each character will go to for a loved one has been tested time and time again. It seems the writers are set to put Team Bat in yet another difficult situation with only two episodes left to go!

Last episode, “Broken Toys,” was packed with family trouble. Marquis, on the loose with crucial information about Ryan and Luke’s secret identities, let Victor Zsasz out of Arkham to stir up some mayhem. While Marquis didn’t let the truth about his sister’s alter ego slip, he did dangle it over her head. He can tell whoever he wants, whenever he wants and there’s nothing she can do about it.

The whole scenario he put together involving their mother Jada, set Ryan up to “unmask” herself as the caped figure with Jada figuring it out via her daughter’s fierce fighting skills. The plan to save Marquis, however, is still in place. With the Joy Buzzer fixed thanks to Kiki Roulette, the Joker’s toymaker, all they need to do is use it on him and he’ll revert back to his previous personality.

But there are three problems they have to contend with. First, Kiki betrayed them and gave the buzzer to Marquis. Second, it can only be used one more time before it’s broken for good. Third, Alice wants it to fix her own brain chemistry and she wants Mary to give it to her.

Admittedly, it was a record scratch moment in the episode. Not because it wasn’t a good twist but because it’s doubtful most viewers would have guessed that Team Bat might get divided among sibling lines in the lead up to the finale.

We just got Mary back, but it’s possible she could betray Ryan and Luke once again. Though instead of being under the influence of Ivy’s vine, she’d be making the choice out of love for Alice.

Will Mary give Alice the Joy Buzzer in Batwoman season 3?

The easiest answer to lean toward is that Mary wouldn’t choose Alice over her Bat family. While the two women have bonded this season, Alice still killed Mary’s mother. There’s no coming back from that. But despite that being the easy answer, there’s still the possibility that Mary could decided to give Alice the Joy Buzzer.

Alice sincerely wants to change. She doesn’t want to be a sociopath struggling with delusions who has a checkered past littered with the dead bodies of her victims. Using the Joy Buzzer would be the easy way out which Mary most decidedly wouldn’t approve of but she was also trying to help Alice escape last episode so their relationship is complicated.

Not to mention, Alice’s delusions are back. Her desire to change and her deteriorating mental health could lead Mary to do what she asks. The trailer for “We’re All Mad Here” shows Alice pressing the buzzer to her head after finding it at Wayne Enterprises but that could be a delusion in itself and not what actually happens.

If Mary does give Alice the Joy Buzzer, it’d be a parallel to Ryan’s choice in the midseason premiere, “Trust Destiny.” She could have desiccated Mary as planned, but she shot Marquis with the serum instead because he had a gun to Luke’s head and was the more pressing threat.

For Mary, Alice’s mental health could be more pressing because she wants to change while Marquis certainly doesn’t. In fact, he’s looking to use the Joy Buzzer on someone so he can do to them what Joker did to him.

The choice really could come down to who it’d be easier to use the device on. Also, if the Batwoman writers intend on keeping Marquis around, he could continue to be a thorn in Ryan’s side in a potential season 4 so they can do more Joker and Batwoman clashes. We’ll have to wait to see where this story goes next but betrayal certainly isn’t off the table.
