X-Men: Magneto is stepping down from the Quiet Council of Krakoa
By Mark Lynch
Magneto’s time as part of the Quiet Council of Krakoa is over in the upcoming comic Immortal X-Men.
When the Quiet Council of Krakoa started in House of X, the main three members were Charles Xavier, En Sabah Nur a.k.a. Apocalypse, and Magento.
During X of Swords, Apocalypse left the Quiet Council to be with his wife. His spot was taken by Destiny in X-Men: Inferno. But now, it seems that another character will be leaving.
Writer of Immortal X-Men Keiron Gillen revealed that Magneto will be the next member of the Quiet Council to leave Krakoa.
Gillen told Entertainment Weekly:
"“Now that I’m in the X-office, I do my meta bulls— and I describe Jonathan as Magneto and the X-office as his Brotherhood of Mutants trying to fight for a better way of comics existing. Of course, my series starts off with Magneto leaving the Quiet Council. It’s not deliberately meta, that bit, but it certainly works.”"
After everything that’s happened to Magneto over the last few months, it makes sense that he would bow out. In X-Men: Trial of Magento, he was blamed for the death of Wanda Maximoff when in actuality, she was behind the whole thing herself. Unfortunately, Magneto couldn’t tell Krakoa what was really going on. Even though she helped bring back all the mutants who died during M-Day.
Then there’s X-Men: Inferno. Xavier and Magneto spent time trying to find Moira and protect her. Not only did it not work, they ended up dying and putting the Quiet Council in a tight spot. After finding out the Moira MacTaggert secret, the Quiet Council debated on not even resurrecting them. That’s a lot for one person to deal with. Even someone as strong as Magneto.
Who could replace Magneto?
The spots that Charles Xavier, Magneto, Apocalypse (formerly) and Destiny held were at the Winter table. These positions seemed to be held by older mutants. It would only make sense that another veteran would take his place. With Cyclops being out of the public eye, he seems to be the best candidate.
Then again, Nathan Summers, a.k.a. Cable, is a long time veteran. Due to his time traveling escapades, he’s put in more hours as a warrior, leader, and politician than any other mutant, so he would also be a great choice.
Don’t be shocked if Sabretooth joins. He’s someone that could throw a wrench into the entire council. However, his time in the Pit could make him a better person. After all, Victor Creed has proven to be a better hero than villain.
On the other hand, the Quiet Council could go in a different direction and pick a younger mutant with potential. Perhaps someone that can grow and be molded into the position. Betsy Braddock has been a leader and is royalty; her connection to Otherworld could help the Council. Rogue is a fan favorite who’d help balance out the Winter section and would have no problem putting Xavier or Destiny in their place. There’s also Rictor who’s in charge of the Druids; another move that’s more political than anything.
